Sewing Machine Magic

I really like the gif that accompanies this post on “How a Sewing Machine Works“.  It is a bit silly however to say it isn’t magic but mechanics.  At any rate, it moved me to post this quote:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”  Arthur C. Clark

I’m not entirely sure if a sewing machine suffices as “sufficiently advanced”  but I’m going to go ahead and say yes…it does.  It is not merely the research, the time and effort put in, and the ingenuity of the invention that matters for sometimes the simplest machines are the most striking in their wizardry.  I suppose we can call this the beauty of physics.  I mean beauty in more than an aesthetic sense, for beauty is not limited to what can be seen with the eyes on the surface level (as popular cliches indicate).. but beauty also in an utilitarian way or in the mental stimulation something engenders..or even just a reveling in the mystery of natural laws.  The beauty of a well designed functional machine.. the beauty of the symmetry of an equation… the beauty of an epiphany.  This ability to see beauty is magic.
