Steven Heller at the Atlantic, reviews a new book by Stephen Bayley titled, “Ugly: The Aesthetics of Everything” and asks What is Ugly? Certain psychological studies have shown there are some universal standards of attractiveness in regards to human figures such as facial symmetry. Other studies point towards the complexity level of what we view as an indicator of what will be cognitively interesting..(ie, fractals and Jackson Pollack). There does seem to be an interplay of innate factors with an undeniable influence of nurture…or what it is learned association and subjective “taste”.
